FUNDAMENTAL REVIEW OF STATE
GOVERNMENT
STANDARDIZATION OF STATE AGENCY WEB SITE HOME PAGES
-
January, 2002,
Governor's office met with DoIT to discuss building a new web site for
the State of Nevada .
- DoIT created several
prototypes.
- Governor's office
worked with templates until an approved State web site
was completed.
- New State of Nevada
web site went into production March 1, 2002.
-
Governor's office then requested that
the State of Nevada begin to develop
websites with the same look
and feel that meets the Web Style Guide criteria. They requested that DoIT work with them to accomplish this by July
1, 2002.
- DoIT felt we needed
to choose a standard navigation for all websites.
- AJMENU was the
website navigation chosen.
The
Nevada
Information Technology Operations Committee (NITOC) had also created an Interim Technical Standard for web content,
Web
Style Guide, which was approved by the E-Gov Steering Committee on
April 17, 2002. It will go to NITOC Review on May 9, 2002.
-
On April 8, 2002, a letter
from Marybel Batjer, Chief of Staff for the Governor, mailed a memo to
Agencies. Subject: Fundamental
Review of State Government-Standardization of State Agency Web Site Home
Pages.
- DoIT was
requested to build templates that contained acceptable variations in font, color
and style (Governor's office requirements) and adhered to NITOC's Web
Style Guide requirements.
-
Requested
templates were available on April 15, 2002.
- DoIT
was also requested to hold one workshop per month through June 2002, which will provide
guidance on how to update your website with the new templates.
PLEASE NOTE: If your agency feels it is
EXEMPT from this directive, you must
contact the Office of the Governor directly.

Dynamic
translation
-
When the user requests a language, we pass a
parameter to the on- line translation site to
translate the SITEMAP. The SITEMAP is just a
page of ALL of the links that can be found
within the website, so ultimately you are
translating the entire website.
-
Translator
also translates ALL links that are found within the SITEMAP (i.e., Link to a press release on the SITEMAP.
The translator also will translate the
press release.)
-
http://babel.altavista.com
is what is being used for translation.
-
According
to Gartner (T-08-6851, T-300-203), machine translation tools have a 60%
- 80% accuracy rate depending upon the type of document being
translated. Because of the
difficulties in translation due to ambiguity, word order, sentence
context, etc., machine translation effectiveness is limited to certain
situations but not in situations requiring a high degree
of accuracy or using informal text.
-
NOTE:
YOU MUST CHANGE THE
INFORMATION WITHIN AJMENU TO YOUR WEBSITE URL
(currently it is ajmenu.state.nv.us).

-
Text Version
-
Instead of creating MANY
pages within the website, we use the SITEMAP with bookmarks.
-
We only
create a
separate web page if the category is large & will make the SITEMAP load too slowly.
-
This also serves as
a TEXT version of the site. All links within the entire site should be
listed on the
sitemap.
